goals
Literally addictive task-tracking
Goals is a goal tracking app that is designed based on the best research in cognitive psychology on human productivity, task completion, and instilling habits.
Goals is organized around the WOOP framework. At the high level, there is something you Wish, which is a Goal in Goals. For each wish, you might have several Outcomes, which in Goals are tasks or habits. When you are making a task or habit, Goals prompts you to consider things that might go wrong, and brainstorm adaptation strategies. During the periodic reviews in Goals, you collect these strategies into an adaptation library that makes it easier to carry out the strategies that have made you successfully productive in the past.
Goals measures your productivity in sprints, but unlike traditional trackers, you don’t know when the sprint will end. This prevents users from “cramming” their productivity and makes every day equally important. Sprints are ended either at an unknown end date, or at a set amount of productivity, meaning that every time you complete a task or habit in Goals, there’s a chance you’ll be psychologically rewarded by the sprint ending. This implements a variable-interval reinforcement schedule the same way a slot machine does: every “pull” gives you a chance of winning.
Finally, most habit-tracking apps use a “streak” that adds psychological pressure over time to continue engaging. While this can be effective, it has the tendency to fail catastrophically when you lose a streak. This is a version of the “abstinence violation effect,” where a person trying to avoid a negative activity continues to engage in it after one break. Goals constructs psychologically safe conditions for users where a single lost day doesn’t eliminate all of your progress.
Goals runs fully locally in your browser, but has an optional sync service for an added fee. Goals also offers AI agent integration.
